Registrant Education

Understand the domain name lifecycle, registrant responsibilities, and measures that help protect your registration.

What Registrants Should Know

These general guidelines help registrants understand their role in maintaining an active and compliant domain name registration.

Provide accurate registration data

Registrant, administrative, and technical contact details should be complete, current, and capable of receiving notices. Inaccurate registration data may affect verification, renewals, transfers, and dispute-related communications.

Safeguard access to your domain account

Maintain appropriate account security controls, protect the email address associated with the registration, and monitor authorization messages so material notices are not missed.

Review applicable use and eligibility rules

Each registry operator may impose eligibility, naming, usage, or abuse-related requirements for a given extension. Registrants remain responsible for complying with those applicable rules.

Registrant Responsibilities

A domain name registration carries ongoing administrative and compliance responsibilities throughout the registration term.

Maintain registration data

Keep names, organization details, email addresses, and telephone numbers current for the duration of the registration term.

Review renewal and expiration notices

Review reminder notices, maintain valid billing arrangements, and renew the domain before expiration to reduce the risk of interruption, suspension, or deletion.

Maintain secure DNS administration

Review DNS changes, restrict unauthorized access, and remove obsolete or unauthorized records that could facilitate phishing, hijacking, or service disruption.

Respond to verification and abuse-related notices

If we, a registry operator, or an authorized third party contacts you regarding registration accuracy, abuse, or applicable legal process, timely and complete responses are recommended.

Domain Life Cycle

The exact timing may vary by extension, but most domain names follow a similar lifecycle.

Registration

A domain name is registered after successful order submission, payment processing, registry acceptance, and any required verification procedures.

Active registration term

During the active term, registrants may manage DNS, update contact information, renew the domain, and request transfers where permitted by applicable policy.

Expiration and applicable grace period

If a domain name is not renewed by the expiration date, services may be interrupted and the name may enter a registry-defined grace period with limited recovery options.

Redemption, deletion, or release

Following expiration, some extensions may provide a redemption process subject to additional requirements or fees. If the name is not restored, it may proceed to deletion and eventual release.

Disputes, Rights, and Good Practice

Maintaining accurate records and responding to notices promptly helps support registrant rights and due process.

Certain trademark-related disputes may be administered through the UDRP or URS, where applicable.

Court orders, registry policies, registrar procedures, and ICANN consensus policies may require a domain name to be locked, updated, suspended, transferred, or deleted.

Maintaining current contact information is important because verification requests, transfer notices, and dispute-related communications are generally directed to the registration contacts on file.
